VAT in the UAE: Register on Time, File on Time, Keep the Evidence.

Value Added Tax (VAT) has applied in the UAE since 1 January 2018 at the standard rate of 5%. Certain supplies are zero-rated or exempt. Once your taxable supplies cross the registration threshold, the Federal Tax Authority expects registration to be done, quarterly returns submitted and five to seven years of records keeping to be guaranteed. Each of those steps has a deadline, and violation of each deadline has a fixed penalty.

A Plus Consulting handles VAT for companies and natural persons doing business in Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah and across the Emirates. Our founder is an FTA-registered Tax Agent, so filings, clarifications and correspondence with the Authority go through our Tax Agent access rather than through you. And because the same team keeps your books, every return reconciles to the ledger line by line.

We work with mainland and free zone companies, including Designated Zones, in English and Russian.

Registration is mandatory once taxable supplies and imports over the past 12 months exceed AED 375,000, or are expected to exceed within the next 30 days. Between AED 187,500 and AED 375,000 registration is voluntary and allows you to recover input VAT.

How VAT Registration in the UAE Works

  1. 1

    Threshold assessment

We measure your taxable supplies turnover and confirm whether registration is mandatory, voluntary or not yet due, and which date the FTA will count from.

  2. 2

    Documents pack

One checklist: Certificate of Incorporation, Trade licence, Memorandum of Association, Emirates ID and passport copies, turnover declaration, contracts and invoices, bank details and customs code where applied, shared by email or through our client portal.

  3. 3

    EmaraTax application

Creation of your taxable person account on the EmaraTax portal and VAT registration request submission with all supporting documents attached. Later linked to our Tax Agent account, so FTA clarification requests come to us and are answered directly.

  4. 4

    TRN and first return

TRN certificate issued, VAT coding set up in your accounting system and the filing calendar created for your first return.

How long will your VAT registration take?

Our turnaround is 1 business day from a complete document pack received till the application filed; the FTA then reviews it.

Tax periods are usually quarterly, or monthly where the FTA assigns it. The VAT return must be submitted, and any tax due paid, by the 28th day after the end of each tax period.

Every return is prepared from a reconciled ledger, so the output and input VAT reported agree with your books. Where recoverable input tax exceeds output tax, you can carry the excess forward or apply for a refund. If you choose a refund, we prepare the claim with the supporting evidence the FTA requires, respond to its queries and follow the refund through to payment into your account.

VAT Deregistration: Without a Penalty Trail

If your business stops making taxable supplies, or its taxable supplies over the previous 12 months fall below the voluntary registration threshold of AED 187,500, you must apply to deregister within 20 business days. A late application attracts an administrative penalty of AED 1,000, plus AED 1,000 for each further month of delay, up to a maximum of AED 10,000. The FTA will not cancel the TRN until all returns are filed and all tax and penalties are paid. An open VAT registration can therefore hold up the liquidation of the company.

  1. 1

Eligibility check and determination of the deregistration date

  2. 2

Deregistration application filed through EmaraTax within 20 business days

  3. 3

Final VAT return filed and all balances settled

  4. 4

FTA approval and TRN cancellation; records retained for the statutory periods

Every step is filed by the Tax Agent, from application to final approval.

Why a Registered Tax Agent, Not Just an Adviser

Advice tells you what to do. Representation means someone does it with you. As an FTA-registered Tax Agent, we act on your behalf once appointed: we file your returns, respond to the Authority's queries and represent you throughout a tax audit. That is the difference between advice and accountability.

VAT Services Cost

VAT return filing is charged as a fixed monthly or quarterly fee, based on your transaction volume and the number of entities or members of a tax group, and it is lower when we also keep your books. Frequently asked questions

Yes. Free zone companies follow the same thresholds as mainland companies, and services provided by a free zone company follow UAE mainland rules. Supplies of goods from, to or inside a Designated Zone can have special treatment, but each transaction shall be professionally evaluated.

Within 20 business days of ceasing taxable supplies, or of your supplies over the previous 12 months falling below the voluntary threshold of AED 187,500. We file the application, the final return and clear the balance so the TRN is cancelled without penalties.

Yes, when the input tax you have paid exceeds the output tax you have charged in a period, typical for exporters, free zone companies and businesses in their first months. We prepare the refund request with supporting documents to the FTA and follow it through to the payment.

E-invoicing becomes mandatory in phases: from 1 January 2027 for businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more, and from 1 July 2027 for SMEs. Invoice data will flow to the FTA electronically, no changes can be made to an e-invoice after submission, and ledgers and returns will be reconciled to the e-invoicing data.

Yes. Location makes little difference: documents move electronically by email or through our client portal, review calls take place online, and we meet in person in Dubai by arrangement. Our registered office is in RAKEZ, Ras Al Khaimah.
